On a cold and blustery, New England day like today, I'm cozy by the fire, littles at my feet, thinking of warmer days. And though I love winter, truly-- this styled shoot with GLASS Event Planning and Christina Flower Co. has me jonesing for fresh blooms and green grass.
The immensely talented Elizabeth Lutz of GLASS Event Planning designed the theme and the styling of the Fig and Fern shoot. Having seen lots of beautiful, traditional styled shoots and weddings, there was an opportunity to showcase something different. A little edge in a wedding is unexpected, fresh and refreshing. I loved the juxtaposition of romantic florals with an edgy bridal look, featuring a lace crop top and skirt from BHLDN (similar here), flower crown and a 10 inch fern tattoo. Whimsical calligraphy graced all the stationary, including a small sign that reads, "I love the shit out of you." There's no white dress, there are tattoos, there's a sailor's tongue amidst the beauty of romantic florals and it was SO good. From the embroidered placemats to the farm table, ghost chairs, and beautiful tablescape to the setting, beneath a beautiful, 160 year old European Cooper Beach tree, Elizabeth nailed it. Did I mention there was a cheesecake? Not a cheesecake but a CHEESEcake-- brie base topped with a wheel of blue, adorned with roses, figs and blackberries. I'm not going to lie, I was hoping that we could all sit around eating it once our work was done. Spoiler alert, it didn't happen. I'm still not over it but putting this out in the universe for next time.
Inspired by the season, florist and horticulturalist Julie Christina forages local, fresh blooms and fruit from gardens in Bristol and Portsmouth Rhode Island. This shoot was no exception as she made magic with a mix of dahlias, leaves, ranunculus, eucalyptus, grapes, hydrangea, roses, figs and more. I was seriously in awe of the florals-- this girl is crazy talented. Julie's new to the scene but not to the trade. Growing up among the wildflowers and trees on her family's Christmas tree farm, the passion for foraging beauty is in her blood and it shows.
We shot at Green Animals in Portsmouth, RI. From sprawling topiary gardens to a fantastically stately 1800s manor, it was the perfect compliment to the avant-garde styling. We had grand plans to showcase the beauty of the 7+ acre property but rain forced us in another direction. Though not the original intention for portraits, the moody library setting added an extra slice of contrast to beautifully showcase the delicate florals.
I'm so proud these people are my people. Are you ever just in awe of the talents that your friends have? If it sounds like I'm gushing, it's because I am. I've been hiding all this beauty on my hard drive for so long. Hope you enjoy!
